Community use was an important factor in designing the new Yelm Middle school, one that would welcome the community. With two gyms, commons and stage, athletic field, covered play, and a dedicated community room, the local community can engage with the space in safe and inviting ways.
Classrooms feature state-of-the-art technology, including assisted listening equipment. There is also an outdoor classroom that can be used as an amphitheater as well as an instructional garden. Additionally, Yelm meets WSSP compliance categories for sustainable design and construction.
Interior and experiential graphic design were informed by conversations with the Nisqually tribe, who described the significance of several local natural resources in Nisqually history. These elements remind users that the school resides on indigenous Nisqually territory. Students contributed to experiential design by choosing motivational messaging for the main entrance to the building and in both locker rooms.
Yelm Middle School accommodates 725 students and was delivered with FORMA Construction using GC/CM methodology. Yelm opened September 2021.
