Hunt Middle School

Location: Tacoma, WA
Client: Tacoma Public Schools/Absher Construction
Area: 96,079 SF

The existing Hunt Middle School was used as a swing site but had sat empty for some time. The design-build team embraced the opportunity to find ways to create a new school community for this existing site that was welcoming, transformative, and provided a connection through thoughtful learning space design. The team engaged district staff and solicited community input, including middle schoolers, which identified honoring the past while celebrating the future as a theme for the new school. Teaching nodes and student collaboration opportunities are strategically placed throughout. Whether it be soft seating in small group breakouts, roll-up garage doors at Science Classrooms, an interactive map of the world or the history of Mt. Rainier, learning tools to adapt to different learning modalities was a driver of the design. Engaging transitions between interior spaces through color identifiers and visual connections was a key driver in the design solution and those connections to the outdoor learning spaces.

The new Hunt Middle School was designed for 600 students and delivered through the Design-Build method.
