Cascade School Age Services Center
First LEED Gold Facility at JBLM
USACE Seattle via Berschauer Phillips Construction Company
Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA
23,000 sf
This Design-Build School Aged Services (SAS) Center accommodates 195 children between the ages 6 of and 10. The building, generous playground, sports field and covered sport court mesh nicely with the adjacent base facilities.
Innovative design solutions integrated into the project include Parallam structures windows and clerestory translucent wall material in the multipurpose gymnasium to enhance daylighting. Custom reading nooks added in the atrium provide comfortable learning spaces.
Use of wood construction, for the majority of the school, required less coordination between trades and a streamlined construction process. Translucent wall panels added daylighting in the multipurpose room while reducing heat loss associated with windows.
BCRA delivered a LEED Gold certifiable project even though this was not required by the RFP, making this facility the first LEED Gold building on JBLM.
BCRA provided Architectural Design, Interior Design (SID and CID), Civil Engineering, Sustainable Design Services and Air Barrier Consulting and Testing Services.

BCRA designed the 250 acre South
Kitsap Regional Park, which became
a first to pursue a Sustainable Sites
Initiative designation.
